About Hand-Eye Supply
Tools, Books & Clothing for Practical Purposes
Online & IRL since 2010
What is a Hand-Eye Supply?
We stock things that are nice to use, hard to find, lovely to touch, and inspiring in origin. From research materials to tool storage, from pocket knives to attractive workwear with pockets to hold those knives, we’ve got something for everyone. We serve your needs from conception, through execution and into life. As the retail operation of Core77 (the “11th most Influential Website in the World”) Hand-Eye Supply merges design-mindedness with the culture of craftsmanship present in our hometown of Portland, OR.
We carry cool things you can use to make other things, but how do we choose? By applying 3-part scrutiny to everything we stock. Every item in the shop needs to meet our high standards for Utility, Story, and Design. Being picky has its benefits: everything we carry is practical, interesting, ethically-sourced and well made.
Who We Are
Most importantly, at HES we specialize in sharing your creative interests. We’re here to help bump you into the right mindset for fun productivity, whether that means project problem-solving, pencil selection, or sharing stories about tools we’ve loved and lost. You can find our fine wares online and in brick & mortar, and we’re dedicated to personal, high-quality interactions however you reach us. Our customer service reflects Hand-Eye’s internal culture of customer-first concern and lifelong learning.
Our team sports tons of talent, including a machinist, a couple of bike mechanics, a welder, a kayak enthusiast, a textile artist, a Volvo collector, and a freakishly high designer per capita rate. Drop us a line, we love hearing about your projects and ideas!
Walking Our Talk
Community engagement is key to supporting a creative culture, and for HES that engagement is more like an endless honeymoon. Our fortnightly Curiosity Club speaking event highlights the varied talents of local minds and encourages ongoing learning. The HES Quarterly brings together talented people and cool gear every three months. You can check out our previous publications, build-outs, workshops and parties at the Projects page, and sign up for info and invites here. While creative work takes good tools and elbow grease, it also benefits from a strong social network!
