A Quick Q+A With Designer Anna Joyce

Posted on 11 April 2015

We recently visited designer-author Anna Joyce to see her beautiful studio and test out our new Fog Linen workwear. After snooping around and watching her work, we asked her a few questions about her process. You can see her line of painted and printed work here, and check out her beautiful book on hand printing, available for preorder now!

HES: How would you describe your job to someone unfamiliar with your work?

Anna: I am a painter, printmaker, designer, author, wife and mother.

What do you love about what you do?

I love working in my studio and getting my hands dirty! I am happiest when I am painting or printing for a new project or collection. I also love teaching and writing.

What parts do you avoid as long as possible?

Anything repetitive! Production work is hard for me. Once I have designed something I usually prefer to move onto the next project.

How does your work influence the way you see the world around you?

I am constantly inspired by the world around me. I draw a lot of inspiration from nature, especially for color and patterns.

Where do you get your best creative thinking done?

In my studio! My studio is filled with all of my favorite things and has lovely natural light. I worked from home until recently and having a studio has changed my life so much for the better. It is a very inspiring place where I feel at home and creative.

Pen or pencil.. or something else? Why?

Brush. I love the lines that a good brush and ink makes.

What makes for better productivity: a spotless desk or a space chock full of interesting stuff?

For me it is a spotless desk in a room filled with interesting things. I enjoy being surrounded by my inspiration, my plants and art, but need a clean, uncluttered table to get my work done.

How do you think design impacts people's daily lives?

Color, pattern and good design make life more beautiful and meaningful, especially if you make those patterns your self. My book STAMP STENCIL PAINT: Making Extraordinary Patterns by Hand was written with just that in mind. The book is filled with simple, beautiful projects to make for your home and wardrobe. I cannot wait to share it with the world.
