Higonokami Pocket Knife with Brass Handle 75mm

Sold Out

Around 1894 hardware wholesaler Taseburo Shigematsu commissioned blacksmith Sadaharu Murakami to create the Higanokami knife based on a blade of unknown origin (perhaps a Mercator knife from Germany?). Like our other folding knives, the simple and rugged construction made it a ubiquitous and long lasting knife in Japan.  At the peak of its popularity there were 50 manufacturers producing the knives. In 1961 after a political assassination led to a banning of blades, the popularity waned and now there are very few manufacturers still making them.

Miyamoto Manufacturing preserves traditional forging skills as well as the history of the Higo knife. The blades are made of white steel and set in a folded sheet of brass. As a friction folder, it has no locking mechanism. The knife is opened using the forged lever tang. The blades are hand-forged and extremely hard but also relatively brittle.
